Free is not cheap
The Freemium model is much hyped. But this can also a dangerous model, especially in the context of social networks. Service provides and freelancers who like provide a public service (while also prompting themselves) are at one point or the other faced with a dilemma: when does free become a cost? One thing to remember about the Freemium model (both as a client and a provider), is TINSTAAFL. For freelancer this also true for negotiations. At some point both can become a cost center. There is good reason why regulators look hard at vendors who cross subsidize products and services.
I try and follow those rules:
- As a client, I always try and understand why a services or a product is free. I try and treat those who provide information as public service with special care, providing positive feedback and support.
- As a provider, I try to be polite but firm. I find that most people who try to get free consulting, are usually quite aware that they are trying to get a service for free. I would usually offer to set up a consultant meeting and use the opportunity to quote my pricing.
