The face of media to come

When I discussed my predictions for IT next year, I gave one example from Novell. Being without much work, I have had too much free time on my hands, so I have taken to donwloading podcast for my time in the gym. In this I have come across twit. It's not new (in Internet time). It's been around since 2005, and has been started by Leo Laporte, from ZDTV (circa 1998). So this is a project started by so-called old media people.

There is nothing old media in the twit setup. This is obvious both from the content and presentation. In the few months I have been following the shows I have see the show expand to new channels, such as YouTube. But it's not only seeing the new channel, the viewers also had the insights from the site about the process and goals. Every now and again something will fail or go wrong, and every time and again you will see an empty studio. This is a far cry from the suited studios of broadcast TV.

It's not only the technology. I think Leo Laporte's personalty plays a large part in it, both in the way he hosts the shows, and the way he not only presents the content, but also his business. I don't know how much twit is a financial gamble (Leo does say he has a day job in broadcast media), but just by looking at the amount of equipment and technical quality of the shows, this was not a cheap enterprise. Listening to underlining discussions on the shows it's obvious that technical hurdles had to be crossed (failed disks, bad microphones).

Twit is the channel to follow, not only to get technology information, but to see how an technology based enterprise evolves - utilizing both disruptive and stable technologies. I only wish for show for the SME and SOHO.
